Immortals, 2011

중등부 미디어 팀 아이들과 함께 본 영화.  잔인한 감이 많아서 그리 썩 좋은 선정은 아니었다는 생각이 들어서 다음에 아이들과 볼 때는 안전하게 PG 영화를 봐야겠다는 마음을 먹게 됨. 
하지만 주변의 평들과는 달리 개인적으로는 만족스러운 영화라고 생각됨.  전체적인 스토리 구성도 괜찮았고, 특히 그래픽이 역시나 spectacle한게 영화관에서 보기 아깝지 않은 영화였음. 


감독과 제작진이 어떤 의도로 이 영화를 만들었을까?


영화에서 생각해 볼 점 몇 가지는:


1. 신이 인간의 삶에 개입하지 않으려 하지만 개입하고 있다는 점.  하지만 왜 제우스는 인간들의 싸움에 개입하지 않으려 했던 것일까?  개인적으로 추측하기로는 영화 처음 부분에 나왔듯이 제우스가 인간들을 사랑한 나머지 인간들의 싸움에 개입했다가 (그때문에 Theseus가 태어났음) 더 큰 싸움을 불러일으키게 된 것을 경험하고는 개입하지 않는 것이 좋다고 결론을 지었을 수도 있겠다는 생각이다. 그래서 제우스는 올림푸스에 있는 다른 신들에게 절대 인간들의 싸움에 개입하지 말라고 했지만 포세이돈, 아레스, 아테나가 이를 어긴다.  이에 대해 화가 난 제우스는 아레스를 불의 채찍으로 화형시켜 버리는데 다른 두 신은 죽이지 않는다. 그 이유가 무엇일까 추측해보건데 아레스는 직접적 개입을 한 것에 반해 다른 두 신은 자연재해를 이용한다든지의 간접적 개입을 했기 때문이 아닐까 싶다. 그래도 다른 두 신 모두 제우스로부터 엄중한 경고를 받았다.  


하지만 여기서 한 가지 아이러니인 점은, 제우스 역시 인간의 전쟁에 참견하지 않으려 하지만 Theseus를 어렸을 때부터 지켜보면서 무예를 익히게 하고 자신감과 소망을 불러넣었다는 점에서 개입을 전혀 하지 않는다고 보기는 힘들다는 생각이다. 


신들이 왜 이렇게 인간의 삶에 개입하려 하는 것일까?
그 이유는 바로 '사랑'일 것이다.


그러면 왜 어떤 이들은 신들이 자신들을 외면하고 무시하며, 따라서 신들이 없다고 생각하기까지 하게 될까?
전쟁을 일으켰던 Hyperion의 경우 무신론자였다.  그래서 온갖 신들의 형상을 파괴하고 신성을 모독하는 행위를 일삼았던 것이다.  게다가 Theseus 역시 처음에는 신의 존재에 대해서 믿지 않았다. 그가 어렸을 때부터 사실 신과 대면했으며 신으로부터 관심과 사랑을 받았음에도 불구하고 말이다. 


그 이유는 첫째, 인간 세계에 개입하지 않으려는 신들의 목적을 달성하는 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 즉, 자신들은 직,간접적으로 개입하지만 인간들이 그것을 지각하지 못하면 인간 세계에 개입하지 않게 되는 것이기 때문에 그렇다.  둘째, 인간들이 본인의 교만함으로 인해 신들의 간섭과 사랑을 자각하지 못하기 때문에 그렇다. 

2. 인간이 자각하든 자각하지 못하든 신은 존재하며 인간을 지켜보고 있다는 것. 거기에 더 나아가 어떤 인간은 신으로부터 선택받기도 한다는 것을 다루고 있다. 영화 시작과 마지막에 소크라테스의 다음과 같은 말을 인용한다:
“All men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine.”
즉, 어떤 사람들은 신으로부터 선택을 받아 의로운 영을 소유하게 됨을 시사한다. 하지만 신으로부터 선택받았다고 할지라도 그 의로운 삶에 부합하는 삶을 살고 살지 않고는 본인의 자유라는 것도 영화에서 말하고 있다. 


3. 하지만 이해가 되지 않는 부분은 어떻게 신들도 죽느냐는 것이다. 영화에서 신들이 Titan에 의해서 피를 흘리고 죽는 것을 보게 된다. 


4. 결국, 신이 그리고 신에 의해 선택받은 자 (신을 믿는 자)가 전쟁에서 이겼다.


이와 같은 맥락에서, 이 영화가 기독교인에게 시사하는 바는 다음과 같다.


1. 하나님은 살아계시다. 인간이 자각하든 하지 못하든 인간들을 지켜보고 계시며 인간의 삶에 직,간접적으로 개입하고 계신다.
2. 어떤 이들은 하나님으로부터 선택(구원) 받았다. 하지만 구원받은 삶에 대한 책임을 지는 것은 개인의 자유의지에 달렸다. 




Synopsis

The Heraklion King of Crete, Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), declares war on Olympus after the Gods fail to answer his prayers to save his family from illness, and starts searching for the Epirus Bow, a powerful weapon created by the God of War Ares(Daniel Sharman), which he intends to use to release the Titans from Mount Tartarus and destroy the gods.

Hyperion attacks several holy places in search of the Epirus Bow, which was lost on Earth during the last war between the Gods and the Titans, and after kidnapping a virgin oracle priestess called Phaedra (Freida Pinto) to help him, advances towards a nearby village, where the young Theseus (Henry Cavill) lives with his mother. Theseus' mother conceived him after being raped, and he is thus considered a bastard and prevented from evacuating the village with its other inhabitants by the soldier Lysander (Joseph Morgan). Theseus defeats him in combat, which he was taught by an old man (John Hurt), and Lysander is discharged by his commanding officer. Infuriated, he offers his services to Hyperion.

The old man is actually Zeus (Luke Evans) in disguise. He meets with Ares, Poseidon(Kellan Lutz), Athena (Isabel Lucas), Apollo (Corey Sevier) and Heracles (Steve Byers), and tells them that they can't directly interfere with the conflict until the Titans are released from Tartarus. Meanwhile, Theseus returns to the village only to discover that Hyperion and his army have already attacked. Hyperion murders Theseus' mother in front of him and sends him to work as a slave in the mines, where Theseus befriends another prisoner, the thief Stavros (Stephen Dorff).

Phaedra has a vision of Theseus fighting Hyperion after accidentally touching him and tells Stavros to make sure Theseus is always by his side. She and the other captured oracles later start a riot, in which she, Theseus, and Stavros escape alongside other slaves. Theseus decides to go after Hyperion and the others follow him. They attack a boat filled with Hyperion's men, but are overpowered. They are however rescued when Poseidon causes a tidal wave which knocks Hyperion's men out. On their way out, Phaedra has a vision that Theseus needs to return to his village and bury his mother, which he does.

In the process, he finds the Epirus Bow, but is attacked by Hyperion's soldier, the Minotaur (Robert Maillet) while the others are attacked by soldiers. The Minotaur was warned of Theseus' presence by Lysander. Theseus finally defeats the Minotaur and rescues his allies using the Epirus Bow, before collapsing due to being poisoned by the Minotaur. Phaedra takes him to her house, where she cures him and they have sex, which causes her to lose her premonitory powers.

The group returns to Phaedra's temple, only to discover that it is filled with Hyperion's soldiers. They capture the group and steal the Epirus Bow, forcing Ares to intervene and save them. Athena comes from Olympus as well. Zeus sees this as treachery, and is ready to kill Athena, but he spares her life. Ares, however, does not back down, and says that he had to do what he did. An infuriated Zeus uses a fire chain to knock Ares into the marble wall killing him. Athena is able to provide horses for the group (under her father's ultimatum that he'd do to her what he did to Ares if she ever aids the group again) which they use to ride to Mount Tartarus which is under attack by Hyperion's forces. Hyperion releases the Titans using the Epirus Bow, and they are confronted by the Gods, while Theseus and his allies join forces with the Athenian army present.

Theseus enters the temple and fights Hyperion. He is stabbed multiple times, but is able to kill Hyperion by stabbing him in the neck before dying. Meanwhile, the Gods are overpowered by the Titans, who kill Stavros, Apollo, Athena and Heracles. Before Zeus returns to Mount Olympus with his dead daughter, he collapses the temple upon the Titans, killing them as well as most of Hyperion's forces, while the rest are crushed by the collapsing temple. Two beams are seen ascending to Olympus which are Zeus carrying his dead daughter and Poseidon. Theseus also ascends to the skies as a beam.

Theseus is welcomed into Mount Olympus by the Gods for his sacrifice, and is awarded with a son from his night with Phaedra. The boy inherits his mother's premonitions and is trained by the old man in mastering them after discovering that, in the future, there will be a war between the Gods and the Titans, with Theseus leading the Gods in battle on Mount Olympus.
